Notes:
The dramatic brushstrokes and bold coloring of this portrait are hallmarks of Robert Henri's best work. The artist avoided traditional portrait commissions and preferred to select his own models from the working classes. He considered the talented Spanish dancer Betalo Rubino to be an artist in her own right, and she in turn invited him to contribute to her performances, allowing him to suggest movements or gestures that would emphasize her stage entrances and exits.
