NOTES
This mask was made by the same artist as 251:1972. The full, curving horns, the delicate incising of the coiffures, and the scalloped fringes that run from ears to chins and end in goatees are clearly carved by the same hand. The artist must have been admired by many important patrons, for such masks were commissioned by individuals to be created in their ideal likenesses. These portrait masks were performed at funerals and on other occasions that called for entertainment and amusement.
