NOTES
Rudi Tröger depicts an idyllic rural landscape, inspired by the Tauber River Valley region in northern Bavaria, but he skews the drawing's scale and proportion. Animals are suspended in mid-air, and the saw and boots in the right corner of the drawing are disproportionately large compared to the nearby workers; the crooked farmhouse just above the horizon seems diminutive compared with the bird flying overhead. When these elements are combined with a lack of linear perspective, they lend a dreamlike aura to Tröger's interpretation of the Bavarian landscape.

Notes:
The primary source of provenance is Betsy Millard (information for appraisal form, SLAM document files]. Other supporting documents are noted.

[1] Galerie Fred Jahn has represented the Munich based artist Rudi Tröger since the gallery's establishment in 1978. This work is illustrated in "Rudi Tröger: Zeichnungen 1957-1985," a gallery catalogue published by Fred Jahn in 1987. It is likely that the drawing was purchased by David Nolan from Fred Jahn sometime after 1987 [SLAM document files].

[2] See note [1].

[3] An invoice dated August 7, 1989 addressed to Earl Millard from James Ropiequet Schmidt of St. Louis suggests that James Schmidt served as a broker for David Nolan and that the drawing was in Mr. Schmidt's possession at the time the sale was made [SLAM document files].

[4] The terms of this partial and promised gift are detailed in the contract between Betsy Millard and the Saint Louis Art Museum [SLAM document files]. Minutes of the Collections Committee of the Board of Trustees, Saint Louis Art Museum, June 3, 2003.
