NOTES
This collage is a part of Reinhard Mucha's "Typeface" series. It contrasts black with white lettering that spells out the word "EIFL" twice. A red abstract shape emanates from the right panel. The red color, associated with fire, may reinforce the reference to Eifel, a dormant volcanic region in western Germany. Many of the works in this series refer to actual places in his country.

Notes:
The primary source of provenance is Betsy Millard [information for appraisals form, SLAM document files].

[1] An E-mail dated April 9, 2005 addressed to Sydney Norton from Katherine Chan of Nolan/Eckman Gallery lists this work as having at one time been purchased from Galerie Gisela Capitain in Cologne [SLAM document files]. It is probable that Raymond Learsy purchased it from this gallery.

[2] An E-mail dated September 28, 2005 addressed to Sydney Norton from Ryan Frank, assistant to Raymond J. Learsy, confirms that this work was part of the Learsy collection, but there are no records of possession dates in their file. An appraisal of the piece was, however, given by David Nolan in October, 1988, suggesting that the work was probably purchased by Mr. Learsy sometime in 1988 [SLAM doc files]. See note [1]

[3] Bill of Sale dated July 11, 1996 [SLAM document files].

[4] The terms of this partial and promised gift are detailed in the contract between Betsy Millard and the Saint Louis Art Museum [SLAM document files]. Minutes of the Collections Committee of the Board of Trustees, Saint Louis Art Museum, June 3, 2003.
