NOTES
This view of a family on their front porch in West Virginia was taken during one of many trips that Nicholas Nixon made from his home in Boston to the southern states. His subjects often came from poorer neighborhoods where he found that people were more open and receptive to his photographic activity. There is a frankness in Nixon's depictions which is neither sentimentalizing nor exploitative.
