NOTES
Ancient Roman architecture inspired the fish-scale ornament on the arms of this chair, in addition to the geometric design around the base of the seat, called a meander pattern. In the 1720s architects such as William Kent, who designed great houses for English nobility, invented a new style of furniture with robust ornamentation adapted from Roman structures in Italy, seen by wealthy Europeans on the Grand Tour of ancient sites and monuments.
