NOTES
The upper arch is adorned with images of a chalice and wafer, a reference to the wine and host taken during the Mass. Two angels, swinging the smoke-emitting censors used to purify the altar, flank the doorway that once held a small bronze door. Above the doorway appear the Latin words OLEUM INFIRMORUM, indicating that the oil stored in this ambry (or niche) was used to anoint the sick. At the bottom is the coat of arms of the Florentine Baroncelli family, from whose chapel this ambry is said to have come.
