Notes:This imposing colonnade, a fabrication on the part of the artist, impresses with its size. In the 18th century, such antiquities served to remind viewers of the power and magnificence of Rome. By juxtaposing small human figures with the over-sized monument, Hubert Robert underscored the sense of wonder that the ancient ruins inspired in visitors. The painting also documents how contemporary Romans adapted ruins into makeshift habitations.
