NOTES
Richard Long created Mississippi Circle at the Saint Louis Art Museum for an exhibition of new sculpture in 1988. After collecting over four tons of limestone rocks from the banks of the Mississippi River in and around St.Louis, the artist arranged them inside a gallery in the form of a broad and unadorned circular band. Long’s immense limestone structure pays spiritual homage to Missouri’s natural topography and the critical role that the river plays in our city’s history and cultural identity.
