NOTES
This bronze depicts the ancient Olympic sport of wrestling which was a combination of boxing and wrestling. "The Wrestlers" is one of many copies of a famous marble sculpture, created by a Roman artist who copied an earlier Greek original. It was admired by 18th-century collectors and connoisseurs, who considered it a fine example of the ancient mastery of the muscular male nude, and commissioned Italian sculptors to produce copies for them.
