NOTES
This view of a goatherd overseeing his charges demonstrates Adam Pynacker’s mastery of color as a means to capture the light and atmosphere of the Roman countryside. By contrasting the pale, tan tones of the vines on the right against the darker background, and varying the reds and blues in the fabrics of the goatherd’s coat and belongings, he is able to capture the rich feeling of the dense afternoon sun as it washes across the southern landscape.

Notes:
The primary source for this provenance is Harwood's catalogue raisonné, cat. no. 23 [Harwood, Laurie B. "Adam Pynacker, c.1620 1673." Doornspijk, Netherlands: Davaco, 1988]. There are slight errors in the spelling of two names in the catalogue raisonné, which Harwood corrected in correspondence with Museum staff in June 2002. "Astley" should be spelled "Ashley" and "Theisger" should be "Thesiger" [letter, SLAM document files]. Exceptions and other supporting documents are noted.

[1] Charles Compton Cavendish was the son of George Augustus Henry Cavendish. The relationship between Mrs. Reginald Ashley and R. Thesiger to these individuals in unknown. Mrs. Reginald Ashley lent the painting to an exhibition in 1960 ["Ideal and Classical Landscape." Cardiff: National Museum of Wales, 1960]. There is a Rodney Thesiger listed in the provenance of the drawing by Bartholomeus Breenbergh, "The Fantastic Rocks and Castle at Bomarzo," at the National Gallery of Art. It is likely that R. Thesiger is Rodney Thesiger [National Gallery of Art, provenance website, www.nga.gov].

[2] According to a telephone conversation between the Museum's Collection Researcher, Elizabeth Hinrichs, and Anthony Speelman at Edward Speelman Ltd. in May, 2002, Edward Speelman bought the painting from R. Thesiger [notes, SLAM document files].
